It could and would happen sometimes to comedic effect. My setting was a cross between Ravnica from Magic the Gathering and Piltover from League of legends so it was very much magicpunk. But in this setting the people of the city had begun to utilize elementals to power machinery and and technology by binding them to these devices. Now elementals at least for this setting are rather mindless as they appear do their work and disappear.

Having just started a campaign, everyone was level 1 and about to leave town to start the actual dungeon they were supposed to crawl when my one player decides he needs to go shopping. He wants to go into the crummiest tent in the bazaar.

He decides he wants to mug the shopkeeper, now I decided that this shopkeeper, named Orag, was a bit of a thug, the leader of the orc gang in this town. So what does this guy do, lays him flat with one blow. I rolled a percentile and decided he had a 1% chance to get a magical item, sure enough 00. I didn't want him getting anything really good since we were just setting off, so he rummaged the orc's brass knuckles, which had ORAG PIMP emblazoned in diamonds across them 1 letter per knuckle.

The enchantment was that whenever he hit someone it branded them with 'ORAG PIMP' They saw so much use, that I had to start having NPCs talk about Orag, 'Orag! I hear he's a total pimp, and there is 50 dead goblin's with his name on them to prove it!' I once got a potion (multi-use) that let me as a wizard cast a spell 2 levels higher than me and continue to cast any spell I had available in succession for 5 turns or something like that, but after those 5 turns I would go utterly brain dead/comatose for 1d8 turns. I want to say it was liquid phoenix brains or something like that, go out in a blaze of glory then rise again kinda thing. Well my answer is that it encourages power creep. Also it's kinda boring! If a PC is given a broken item it just makes things dull. Now there is nothing wrong at all with incredibly powerful items if used correctly in game!

Let us take the Deck of Many Things as a example. The insanely good benefits are matched equally by its drawbacks.

So yes while dropping it into a game can be a massive changer it doesn't tend to power creep (unless if people are very lucky.)Now the example given here by is a potion that at first glance doesn't seem that big of a deal. But looking at it more closely it kinda is ( at a lower level to mid level.

Still effective at later though!), as what it allows you to do is use a metamagic feat (maybe heighten spell I'm not to sure) at no loss of spell slots. That's an amazing effect in itself!

Also the ability to then cast any spells left over for 5 turns brings the potion out to an amazing high level of effectiveness! Even the downside of it isn't that bad. Being unable to do something for 1d8 turns is terrible for a front line fighter (so many attacks of opportunity!) but for a wizard? Well it's no loss if you just spent the last 6 rounds destroying anything in sight! The bad effect can even be neutralised by casting a protective spell in your last round. Resilient sphere anyone? The cost of this potion would have to be very high or hard to get to make it a balanced item.

Or increase the downside!. I suppose those are all valid points, but for one its a one use potion (unless yore an alchemist, alcheical allocation PF!), also your particular uses for it really only appeal to the min/max crowd, and also its an RPG.

Homebrewing/awesome items just mean more flavor, more roleplaying, and more depth to the overall story. If something is reeeeaaaallly broken, then just DM your way to taking them down.

Magic Sword Movie

I think its an awesome item, and one that i would use in my campaign, even if its potentially broken.
